Brandjam: Humanizing Brands Through Emotional Design

This lecture with Curator, Virginia Budny focuses on the historic artists' neighborhood of Washington Square. After training in Europe, some of America's most famous painters and sculptors transformed stables and town houses north of Washington Square into artists' studios. Discovering Artisanal Sake (D/F, E)
Sake (rice wine) is one of the fastest growing segments in the wine market, fueled by the increase in popularity of Asian, and particularly Japanese, cuisine. NY's better wine shops now carry a plethora of small production Sakes, while top Asian restaurants, like Nobu, Megu and Maturi carry a complete line of Sakes. What is less expected is that some of NY's best non-Japanese restaurants are jumping on the Sake bandwagon. Dating from the dawn of history, the art of brewing Sake has been a Japanese tradition. This tasting presents the opportunity to experience 12 great Sakes in varying styles.

Art Exhibit: The Building Show (A, C)
Buildings have become iconic figures of cities and countries; these architectural wonders are either loved or despised by their neighbors, visitors and passersby. Often times buildings have deeply rooted historical significance, they form skylines that are embedded into our vertical memory and hold infinite stories within their walls. Other times buildings are surrounded by controversy, neighborhoods are rezoned, gentrification causes displacement and old buildings are torn down and quickly rebuilt for new uses. In homage to these vertical symbols Exit Art presents The Building Show, an exhibition featuring twenty-six conceptual, realistic, personal, intimate and analytical artworks that are defined by artists’ personal relationships to existing structures.

Mark Doty Discusses his latest novel: Dog Years (L)
This book is about dogs, that is to say, about everything we cannot talk about. Although Mark Doty manages to write about what he calls the 'unsayable' about our relationships with animals, and about unspeakable times of loss, Dog Years is not a dark book. It is illuminated from within by gorgeous wonder. This book shows both the abundant pleasures and unavoidable heartbreak of loving people, life, and especially dogs.

Little Feat come to NYC (C, M)
Though they had all the trappings of a Southern-fried blues band, Little Feat were hardly conventional. Led by songwriter/guitarist Lowell George, Little Feat was a wildly eclectic band, bringing together strains of blues, R&B, country and rock & roll. The group was exceptionally gifted technically and their polished professionalism sat well with the slick sounds coming out of Southern California during the '70s. However, Little Feat were hardly slick they had a surreal sensibility, as evidenced by George's idiosyncratic songwriting, which helped the band earn a cult following among critics and musicians. Featuring: Paul Barrere, Sam Clayton, Kenny Gradney, Richie Hayward, Shaun Murphy, Bill Payne and Fred Tackett

Uptown Girls? Ana Paula and Lupita Jones (A, C, D/F)
Ana Paula and Lupita Jones have been charming audiences while taking turns performing Mexcian pop ballads from the 1960s and '70s, while stirring the crowd to dance the beat of salsa and reggae. You could say that duo is a bit of a novelty in this part of town considering that Ana and Lupita are really Jesus and Evaristo two men who work during the week. On weekends they become lip-synching transvestites not unusual for certain parts of Manhattan, but a rarity in places like an East Harlem family restaurant.
