Book Discussion and Signing (A, E, L)
Alice Crary with her latest novel, Beyond Moral Judgment.
What is moral thought and what kinds of demands does it impose? Alice Crary's book Beyond Moral Judgment claims that even the most perceptive contemporary answers to these questions offer no more than partial illumination, owing to an overly narrow focus on judgments that apply moral concepts (and a corresponding failure to register that moral thinking includes more than such judgments.

Cora Daniels discusses her latest book, Ghetto Nation (E, L)
We live in a society where shows like Pimp My Ride top cable ratings, baby mama has become a family term, pimp and ho Halloween costumes are sold in toddler sizes on the internet, and even Martha Stewart proudly boasts to television viewers that she "can get ghetto when she needs to." So says Cora Daniels in GhettoNation. In this thought provoking critique Daniels points out that singers who demean women, devalue education, and promote violence deepen the views of African-American stereotypes that white folks have believed but most importantly contributes to the destruction of civility.

Photography Exhibit: Tom Sandberg: Photographs 1989 - 2006 (A)
Working for almost thirty years, exclusively with large format, black-and-white film, Sandberg has produced a remarkable body of work that is consistent in its vision and imbued with a sense of mystery and great depth of feeling. Whether he depicts sublime snow-covered mountains, a car parked in the street, the head of an infant, or a spectral house shrouded in fog, his pictures are about what it means to be alive. Many of Sandberg’s pictures are aerial views the earth seen from above, in a sense, in a state of suspension. One of his most hauntingly beautiful pictures is an image of a plane seeming to hover just a few feet above a runway. He returns time and again to pictures of the sun, the ocean, endless clouds, and the horizon. In some the image is barely visible, as if testing the limits of what the eye can see. Sandberg’s work is about photography, about the act of seeing, and ultimately about being in the world.

Elsewhere presents: Volume of Smoke (A, C)
On December 26th, 1811, the Richmond Theatre burned to the ground. A standing-room only audience of 600 people had gathered that night to see a touring company present a billing of several different pieces. During The Bleeding Nun, a short play of haunted star-crossed lovers, the fire began. Of those 600 in attendance, seventy died many women and children, many trampled in the panic that ensued. In response to the tragedy, Richmond, VA, erected a church on the ashes of the theatre and banned all public performance (including street musicians) for eight years. Weaving together a narrative out of more than twenty different characters in his signature lyrical prose style, Clay McLeod Chapman constructs a narrative of the lead up to and aftermath from the Great Richmond Theatre Fire in the play volume of smoke. Based on interviews conducted with survivors of the fire in an unpublished 19th-century manuscript, volume of smoke is a beautiful, moving, surprisingly funny voyage into the heart of disaster and our responses to it.

Jenifer Jackson and Her Boys Reunite (A, M)
Jenifer’s classic, melodic writing and her sultry, understated singing have critics comparing her to such notables as Joni Mitchell, Carole King, Astrid Gilberto, Burt Bacharach and Marvin Gaye. She may flit through an assortment of easy on the ear sophisticated musical genres, but what remains consistent is the fluidity of her vocals, forming themselves to whatever shapes the music demands and the urban romance concerns of her lyrics, whether she's talking about the power of love to provide meaning, the thrill of that first encounter or the melancholy of hearts healing.

Indigo Girls (M)
Their two-women-with-guitars formula may not seem very revolutionary on paper, but the combination of two distinct personalities and songwriting styles provided tension and an interesting balance. Emily Saliers, hailing from the more traditional Joni Mitchell school, had a gentler sound, was more complex musically, and leaned toward the abstract and spiritual. Meanwhile, Amy Ray draws heavily from the singer/songwriter aspects of punk rock, citing influences such as the Jam, the Pretenders, and Hüsker Dü for her more abrasive and direct approach. In over two decades of recording, they've managed to garner respectable mainstream success and keep their core following.

Thursday, March 22, 2007 (World Water Day)

World Water Day (E)
This international day of observance and action to draw attention to the plight of the more than 1 billion people world wide that lack access to clean, safe drinking water. Celebrated since 1993, World Water Day was designated in 1992 when the United Nations (UN) General Assembly passed a resolution. In many ways though, World Water Day is still a relatively unknown event. In 2006 with the strong backing of the Starbucks Coffee Company and other leading corporate and non-profit allies, we began a major effort to establish March 22 as a day where everyone, regardless of their involvement in water issues, pauses to reflect on the impact of the world water crisis and takes small but meaningful ACTION to make a difference. You can help. We hope you’ll help spread the word and take a moment to lend your voice to this important issue. Join us as we take action to address this critical global problem. Events and activities will take place in 26 cities across the United States and Canada.

Welling makes the perception of color his concept, and Plumbago blossoms his subject. Throughout his investigations into nature of color. The result of this process is extremely beautiful, engaging, transformative imagery that is visually entrancing and compellingly intelligent.

James Reams and The Barnstormers Perform in Brooklyn (A, M)
This band relies on early country material and originals written in authentic style. The results are a virtual history of the music and its roots, played in a clean, heartfelt manner that is somewhere between Monroe's and the Stanleys'.” The band plays traditional bluegrass music with an old-time country edge, and a sound that’s very much their own. It features driving rhythm and hard-edged harmonies that take you back to a time before bluegrass was smoothed out for the uninitiated, the ill-prepared or the faint of heart. The band includes James on guitar and lead vocals; Mark Farrell on mandolin, fiddle and harmony vocals; Reuben Radding on upright bass and harmony vocals; and Doug Nicolaisen on banjo. James's lead is joined by Reuben and Mark's vocals to create the Barnstormers' three-part harmony.

Discovering Artisanal Sake (D/F, E)
Sake (rice wine) is one of the fastest growing segments in the wine market, fueled by the increase in popularity of Asian, and particularly Japanese, cuisine. NY's better wine shops now carry a plethora of small production Sakes, while top Asian restaurants, like Nobu, Megu and Maturi carry a complete line of Sakes. What is less expected is that some of NY's best non-Japanese restaurants are jumping on the Sake bandwagon. Dating from the dawn of history, the art of brewing Sake has been a Japanese tradition. This tasting presents the opportunity to experience 12 great Sakes in varying styles.

Art Exhibit: The Building Show (A, C)
Buildings have become iconic figures of cities and countries; these architectural wonders are either loved or despised by their neighbors, visitors and passersby. Often times buildings have deeply rooted historical significance, they form skylines that are embedded into our vertical memory and hold infinite stories within their walls. Other times buildings are surrounded by controversy, neighborhoods are rezoned, gentrification causes displacement and old buildings are torn down and quickly rebuilt for new uses. In homage to these vertical symbols Exit Art presents The Building Show, an exhibition featuring twenty-six conceptual, realistic, personal, intimate and analytical artworks that are defined by artists’ personal relationships to existing structures.

Mark Doty Discusses his latest novel: Dog Years (L)
This book is about dogs, that is to say, about everything we cannot talk about. Although Mark Doty manages to write about what he calls the 'unsayable' about our relationships with animals, and about unspeakable times of loss, Dog Years is not a dark book. It is illuminated from within by gorgeous wonder. This book shows both the abundant pleasures and unavoidable heartbreak of loving people, life, and especially dogs.

Little Feat come to NYC (C, M)
Though they had all the trappings of a Southern-fried blues band, Little Feat were hardly conventional. Led by songwriter/guitarist Lowell George, Little Feat was a wildly eclectic band, bringing together strains of blues, R&B, country and rock & roll. The group was exceptionally gifted technically and their polished professionalism sat well with the slick sounds coming out of Southern California during the '70s. However, Little Feat were hardly slick they had a surreal sensibility, as evidenced by George's idiosyncratic songwriting, which helped the band earn a cult following among critics and musicians. Exhibit Opening and Artists Reception (A, C, D/F)
Domestic Scandals: Takashi Tasumura
The photographs in Yasumura’s series, Domestic Scandals, were taken in his parents’ middle- class home in Japan over the course of seven years. Using a four-by-five-inch camera, the artist focuses on objects as found in the home’s interior, where traditional Japanese decorations and objects have been replaced by or are juxtaposed with modern, plastic and mass-produced goods. The color-saturated photographs of everyday items and backgrounds a hot pink stapler against cool tiled walls, a boom box placed near sliding doors, and a pair of Spiderman slippers on a linoleum-covered floor are void of the sentimentality thought to exist within the domestic realm.

Book Discussion with Farley Granger and Robert Calhoun (C, E, L)
With Farley’s autobiography: Include Me Out, My Life from Goldwyn to Broadway
In classic Hollywood tradition, Farley Granger, a high school senior was discovered by Sam Goldwyn's casting director in an off-Hollywood Boulevard play. In his autobiography, Granger describes how he learned his craft as he went on to star in a number of films, giving an insider's view of working with Hitchcock on Strangers on a Train and Rope, Luchino Visconti on Senso, and Nick Ray on They Live by Night. He is eloquent about his bisexuality and tells of affairs with Patricia Neal, Arthur Laurents, Shelley Winters, Leonard Bernstein and Ava Gardner and his involvement with Barbara Stanwyck, Joan Crawford, and Tyrone Power. Granger recreates his legendary struggle to break his contract with Goldwyn. He captures the thrill of acting on the stage with Janice Rule, June Havoc, Larry Hagman, Barbara Cook. Granger's delightful and elegant memoir captures the extravangance of Hollywood's Golden Age-and provides colorful portraits of many of its major players.

Having seen and experienced unjust realities of the world, Mr. Kimura turned his attention to nature in search of the meaning of truly “rich” life. His landscape paintings represent deep human consciousness. Hinting subtle but unmistakable characteristics of Mr. Kimura’s style, the paintings of landscapes and great relics of the world are transformed into “healing art.” It is important for an artist like Mr. Kimura to have exhibitions in New York where people who have left their homes and families behind gather.

Bike Tour: The Sensational Park and Soul Tour (C, E, S)
The East Side of Manhattan is the city’s wealthiest neighborhood with extravagant brownstones and mansions. Next door is Central Park, which never fails to amaze with its sheer natural beauty (all man-made). Through the park we’ll visit Strawberry Fields, the only "beach" on Manhattan Island, the North Woods loch, an authentic 3500 year old obelisk, an $18 million lawn, as well as one of the largest stands of still surviving magnificent elms in the western world. Highlights in Harlem include a live Sunday gospel service, as well as a dramatic poetry reading by the home of the "Black" Carl Sandberg. We’ll see Clinton’s new office and a former grand synagogue that is now a major Black church. Enjoy a "Bike and Bite" soul food lunch in Harlem. (food cost not included)
Meeting location: from the East Side of Manhattan (location released upon signing up)
10:15a - It is approximately 12 miles and lasts about 5 hours
$65 cost includes the bike, a helmet, and the licensed tour guide ($10 less with your own bike)

Light - Filled Cityscapes of Brooklyn and Manhattan
Whether it is a gritty industrial street near her studio by the Gowanus Canal, a sidewalk in Park Slope, or the morning splendor of Union Square Park, she instills her oil paintings with color and light while recording the (sometimes elusive) beauty of her subject. The paintings become infused with her own wonder and the delight of discovery.
