James M. McPherson discusses his new book: The Mighty Scourge (C, E)
In this collection of provocative and illuminating essays, McPherson offers fresh insight into many of the most enduring questions about one of the defining moments in our nation's history. McPherson sheds light on topics large and small, from the average soldier's avid love of newspapers to the postwar creation of the mystique of a Lost Cause in the South. Readers will find insightful pieces on such intriguing figures as Harriet Tubman, John Brown, Jesse James, and William Tecumseh Sherman, and on such vital issues such as Confederate military strategy, the failure of peace negotiations to end the war, and the realities and myths of the Confederacy. This Mighty Scourge includes several never-before-published essays pieces on General Robert E. Lee's goals in the Gettysburg campaign, on Lincoln and Grant in the Vicksburg campaign, and on Lincoln as Commander-in-Chief. In that capacity, Lincoln invented the concept of presidential war powers that are again at the center of controversy today.

Book Discussion and Signing with Philip Kitcher - Living with Darwin (E, L)
Charles Darwin has been at the center of white-hot public debate for more than a century. In Living With Darwin, Philip Kitcher peers into the flames swirling around Darwin's theory, sifting through the scientific evidence for evolution, Creation Science, and Intelligent Design, and revealing why evolution has been the object of such vehement attack. Kitcher ranges back in time to provide valuable perspective on the present controversy, describing the many puzzling issues that blocked evolution's acceptance in the early years, and explaining how scientific research eventually found the answers to these conundrums. Kitcher argues that the problem with Intelligent Design isn't that it's "not science," as many critics say, but that it's "dead science," raising questions long resolved by scientists. But after providing a convincing case for evolution, Kitcher points out that it is also important to recognize the cost of Darwin 's success the price of "living with Darwin

Art Exhibit:
Henri Cartier-Bresson’s Scrapbook (photographs 1932 - 46) (A, C, E)
Cartier-Bresson's personal scrapbook of his best work from his rich early period (1932-46) provides an extraordinary window onto his process and artistic development, documenting both his travels to Spain and Mexico and his encounters with Surrealism and modern art. At the beginning of World War II, Cartier-Bresson was captured and held in a German prisoner of war camp for three years before he escaped in 1943. To the outside world, Cartier-Bresson was presumed dead, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York was preparing a memorial exhibition (which ultimately took place in 1947). When Cartier-Bresson emerged, alive, he joined the efforts to assemble this retrospective. He selected and personally printed over 300 examples of his best works including many that had never printed before. Upon his arrival in New York in April 1946, he bought a scrapbook into which he meticulously glued all the prints in chronological order. These prints, mostly removed from the scrapbook by Cartier-Bresson in the 1990s, have been reassembled for this occasion.

Art Exhibit: Off the Map: Landscape in the Native Imagination (A, C)
For Native people, land has multiple meanings. It is home, culture and identity, but it also represents violence, isolation and loss. The artists in Off the Map reinvent and examine landscape from this complex perspective, creating work that exists outside of Western landscape traditions. Their work also defies common expectations of Native American art in both its form and content. The artists in Off the Map use the landscape as both muse and subject, but none seek to represent a specific place located in a guidebook or on a map. Their work embodies the longing and emotion, connection to and detachment from the land that are universal to contemporary Native experience.

This exhibit explores the art of the visual narrative by presenting new and recent work from four emerging to mid-career artists of exceptional promise. With popular culture constantly penetrating more deeply into the once distinct realm of the fine arts, narrative forms such as comics, movies and television are exerting increased influence on the work of visual artists. Stories are, and have always been, the glue that binds culture together, and hence they are sources of a common visual language that can help us make sense of who we are.

Building Illusions, Then and Now (C, E)
Until recently, theater production meant traditional building and painting. New York City was home to many of the major scenic studios in the country and to generations of master craftsmen. In recent decades, however, economics and changing aesthetics have combined to eliminate almost all such work. We will look at the great scene painting and building through the mid-twentieth century, as well as look at what is happening now particularly with projected scenery.

Opening Exhibit and Artists Reception (A, C, E, F/D, P)
A.A. Rucci, Don’t take all night, to show me you love me
In this show, he will debut a series of new paintings along with sculptural work. Within the multiple pictorial and spatial contradictions, a more intimate, open narrative has emerged. In this new body of paintings, Rucci's naughty, headless characters appear again. However, this time the ground seems to be taking over. In some cases, the actors disappear altogether, leaving looming architectural facades to fill the set. When the figures are replaced with birds, or when the omnipresent stage is reduced entirely to abstraction, there remains a tingle of recognition, expectation and desire. Rucci's masterfully precise lines, super-saturated, plastic colors and simulated wood-grain combine to create paintings and sculptures that are inviting and human. They evoke landscapes, domestic interiors, and, everyone's first trip to Orlando, Florida.

Art Exhibit: (A, C, E)
GIANTS: The Twin Towers & the Twentieth Century
This exhibit commemorates the original World Trade Center, viewing its creation in the context of the technological ambitions of the 1960s and the hundred-year evolution of New York’s skyline. On their completion in 1971 and 1973, the Twin Towers were both the tallest and the largest skyscrapers in the world. Innovative engineering carried the structures to 110 stories, at 1362 and 1368 feet, and floors of nearly an acre multiplied the space of each tower into more than 4 million square feet. The scale of these giants has been exceeded only once in history, by the contemporary Sears Tower in 1974. The exhibition features architectural and engineering models, construction photographs and films, drawings and other documents addressing the planning and design on the complex.

Howie says, “ Come see an excellent exhibition at NY Historical Society on the economics of slavery in Civil war, as viewed from a New York perspective.”
New York Divided: Slavery and the Civil War (A, C, E, L)
This is the final exhibition in the New-York Historical Society's groundbreaking series on slavery and its impact on the people, landscape, institutions and economy of New York. New York Divided offers a bold look at one of the most challenging periods in New York City's history, when it was torn by the violence of the 1863 draft riots, produced some of the most significant figures in the abolitionist movement, and became the economic engine of the country. New York was a virtual "Capital of the South," with major commercial and political ties to Southern slavery and, at the same time, a major center of the nation's abolitionist movement. The exhibition traces the evolution of New York's rise to national and global economic power and its relationship to the nation's confrontation with issues of slavery and racial inequality against the backdrop of the Civil War. While at the museum, check out the gospel and spiritual music performances.
