Andy Rooney discusses and signs his new book, Out of My Mind (E, L)
Every Sunday evening, millions of viewers tune in to 60 Minutes to hear Andy Rooney riff on everything from coffee percolators to the state of the union. Millions more read his weekly newspaper column. Why? Because Rooney tells it like it is.
But Rooney fans have never seen him quite like this. Andy Rooney is plain frustrated by what's going on in America and the world. Why can't Americans-let alone our president-speak English anymore? How do we expect to fight a terrorist enemy that we can't even locate? And when did capitalism go so terribly wrong? This book isn't all heady stuff, though.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (A, D)
When Leonide Massine choreographed Gaite Parisienne for the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo in 1938, he probably never imagined that the colorful female characters in a fashionable Parisian café would be danced by male primo ballerinas in size 12- pointe shoes. But the talented and technically masterful dancers including Margeaux Mundeyn, Ida Nevasayaneva and Yuriki Sakitumi of the Trockadero make this classic their own with the same aplomb, nuance and laugh-out-loud hilarity they pour into all of their lovingly recreated works.

The Pursuit of Happiness Exhibit (A, E)
This exhibit features ten New York-based artists: John Bowman, Diane Carr, Rebecca E. Chamberlain, Jonny Detiger, Vandana Jain, Tracy Nakayama, Alexander Reyna, Kent Rogowski, Carol Shadford, and Jennifer Sullivan. The Pursuit of Happiness explores representations of happiness in contemporary art as a question or proposition more than a definitive statement. Some works openly welcome this fleeting emotion into their iconography, while others harbor skepticism toward it by examining false notions of happiness in a consumer-driven society. Other artists use tropes of happiness as a formal launching point into other areas. Whether happiness is bright colors, pretty pictures, love, sex, food, or a state of being is debatable; it is clear that happiness is an imperative motivating factor in human behavior and therefore it is also a motivating factor in art.

Light x Eight: The Hanukkah Project (A, C, H)
This exhibit marks the Jewish festival of lights with an exhibition of installations by eight emerging and mid-career artists. While the use of light and the number eight are certainly symbolic in this Jewish context, the specific way that light is used in each of these pieces extends the metaphor of celebration in surprising and unexpected ways. Light is a symbol of transformation in the story of Hanukkah: when an oil lamp miraculously burns for eight days, a desperate situation is changed into one of hope.

What Makes a Style “Local”? (A, C, E)
Observations on American Neoclassical Furniture
In the late 18th and early 19th century, uniquely American interpretations of English and French neoclassical furniture designs emerged in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore, the principal formal furniture-making centers of the new American Republic. In this lecture, father and daughter, Stuart P. Feld and Elizabeth Feld, of Hirschl & Adler Galleries, will explore some of the most important cabinetmakers of that time from these four major centers of production. They will examine the stylistic impact of these innovators on the cabinetmaking trade and their influence on local production.

Circus Oz (A, C, D, M)
Circus Oz presents audiences with a circus that is also a playful theatrical subversion of the idea of 'circus'. As post-modern artists we have taken old forms and re-framed them. We shamelessly plunder the traditions of conventional circus and blend them with topical issues, relevant imagery, contemporary music, physical theatre and comedy. At our best we are pirates on the high seas of performance, looting our way through the riches of hundreds of years of convention, specialisation and defined genre. In circus we don't start with a script. The scripts are the bodies of the performers themselves.

Walking Tour: New York in the Time of Antonin Dvorak (S)
On the anniversary of the world premiere of Dvorak’s great symphony "From the New World" at Carnegie Hall, we thought it would be fitting to honor the Czech composer with a look at the New York in which he lived from 1892 to 1895 as the director of the National Conservatory of Music, and with which he fell in love in the most unexpected way. We will see, in the environs of Stuyvesant Square and Gramercy Park, whether we can recapture the world of Dvorak and his fascinating friends, like Harry Burleigh, Will Marion Cook, and James Gibbons Huneker - above all whether we can recapture Dvorak’s wide-eyed rapture. "That's what I'm aiming for," he admits. "I don't think I've fully gotten there, but that's the goal." And with Youth, he makes a quantum leap closer to attaining it. Georgia native J. Morgan Puett emerged in the mid-1980s as a fashion designer. Her distinctive style, which drew from sources that explored the history of garments, were hand-made, crafted of hand-dyed natural fabrics, often in wrinkled, informal states. Her quirky SoHo retail space was heralded for its evocative environment a bewildering combination of store, art installation, architectural remnant, and factory. Puett closed her Wooster Street store in 1997, and archived all of its contents from dresses and patterns to financial records and shipping receipts-most of which was preserved with natural beeswax.

Americans in Paris (1860 - 1900) Exhibit (A, C, E)
In the late 19th century, American artists by the hundreds including such luminaries as James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, Thomas Eakins, and Winslow Homer were irresistibly drawn to Paris, the world’s new art capital. Paris inspired decisive changes in American painters’ styles and subjects, and stimulated the creation of more sophisticated art schools and higher professional standards back in the United States.
This landmark exhibition features some 100 oil paintings by 37 Americans whose accomplishments proclaim the truth of what Henry James observed in 1887: "It sounds like a paradox, but it is a very simple truth, that when to-day we look for ‘American art’ we find it mainly in Paris.
