Harlem Speaks: Reggie Workman talks about his life (C, E, M)
Reggie is a brilliant player whose versatile style fits into all jazz settings. He played piano, tuba, and euphonium early on but settled on bass in the mid-'50s. After working regularly with Gigi Gryce (1958), Red Garland, and Roy Haynes, he was a member of the John Coltrane Quartet for much of 1961. Workman has been both an educator, most readily associated with The New School, while also serving on the faculty of The University of Michigan, and a working musician, and has played with numerous legendary jazz musicians including Max Roach, Art Farmer, Mal Waldron, David Murray, Sam Rivers, and Andrew Hill. In the 1980s, Workman began leading his own group, the Reggie Workman Ensemble. He also began a collaboration with pianist Marilyn Crispell that lasted into the next decade. During the '90s, Workman was not only active with his own ensemble, but also in Trio Three.

Outdoor Art Exhibit: Doug Aitken: Sleepwalkers (A, C)

January 16th - February 12th, 2007
The Museum of Modern Art and Creative Time, the New York based public art organization, have jointly commissioned Doug Aitken to create the artist's first large-scale public artwork in the United States. The project is also the first to bring art to MoMA's exterior walls. Continuous sequences of film scenes will be projected onto eight facades, including those on West Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth streets and those overlooking The Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Sculpture Garden. Inspired by the densely built environment of New York's midtown, the artist will create a cinematic art experience that directly integrates with the architectural fabric of the city while simultaneously enhancing and challenging viewers' perceptions of public space. The project, filmed in New York City, will be shown daily from 5-10p and is intended to be visible from many public vantage points adjacent to the Museum.

A retrospective of the work of the acclaimed fashion designer Ralph Rucci. This exhibit marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of his career in fashion. It includes approximately 100 of his garments including some suspended from the ceiling. An avid art collector and accomplished painter, Rucci often finds inspiration in paintings and sculpture. Pieces from his private collection ancient Khymer sculpture, Japanese painted screens and bamboo baskets, Indian sculpture, and contemporary art by Francis Bacon and Cy Twombly as well as paintings by Rucci himself will be displayed near the garments that they inspired.

Glitter and Doom: German Portraits from the 1920s (A, C, E)
Political, economic, and social turmoil shaped Germany’s short-lived Weimar Republic (1919–1933). These pivotal years also witnessed an incredibly creative period in German literature, art, music, film, theater, and architecture. In painting, a trend of matter-of-fact realism took hold. Disillusioned by the cataclysm of World War I, the most vital German artists moved towards what became known as a Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity), in particular, a branch known as Verism. Looking soberly, cynically, and even ferociously at their fellow citizens, these artists found their true métier in portraiture, as seen in the 40 paintings and 60 works on paper featured in “Glitter and Doom.”

James “Athenian” Stuart, 1713 -1788: The Rediscovery of Antiquity
In 1748, James Stuart, along with fellow antiquarian scholar Nicholas Revett, lobbied the Society of Dilettanti, an influential group of wealthy English connoisseurs, for funds to create a “new and accurate description of the Antiquities &c. in the Province of Attica.” Upon receiving support, the Englishmen spent two years painstakingly surveying buildings throughout Athens. Their meticulous observations resulted in the first volume of Antiquities of Athens (1762), a landmark publication that played a central role in the development of neoclassicism, and the creation of the “Greek style.” The book earned Stuart the nickname “Athenian” and paved the way for his influential career as an architect and designer. On a private tour of the first comprehensive exhibition of Stuart’s career, including his interiors for Spencer House and Keddleston Hall.

6 of Chaplin’s best one-reelers. With his trademark Little Tramp screen persona, Charlie Chaplin transformed film comedy while the medium was still in its infancy. A London native, he came to the United States with a touring pantomime troupe. Producer Mack Sennett spotted Chaplin and signed him to a contract in 1913. One year later, clad in baggy trousers, big shoes and a bowler, he originated the Little Tramp character.

The Pursuit of Happiness Exhibit (A, E)
This exhibit features ten New York-based artists: John Bowman, Diane Carr, Rebecca E. Chamberlain, Jonny Detiger, Vandana Jain, Tracy Nakayama, Alexander Reyna, Kent Rogowski, Carol Shadford, and Jennifer Sullivan. The Pursuit of Happiness explores representations of happiness in contemporary art as a question or proposition more than a definitive statement. Some works openly welcome this fleeting emotion into their iconography, while others harbor skepticism toward it by examining false notions of happiness in a consumer-driven society. Other artists use tropes of happiness as a formal launching point into other areas. Whether happiness is bright colors, pretty pictures, love, sex, food, or a state of being is debatable; it is clear that happiness is an imperative motivating factor in human behavior and therefore it is also a motivating factor in art.

Light x Eight: The Hanukkah Project (A, C, H)
This exhibit marks the Jewish festival of lights with an exhibition of installations by eight emerging and mid-career artists. While the use of light and the number eight are certainly symbolic in this Jewish context, the specific way that light is used in each of these pieces extends the metaphor of celebration in surprising and unexpected ways. Light is a symbol of transformation in the story of Hanukkah: when an oil lamp miraculously burns for eight days, a desperate situation is changed into one of hope.

Major monuments visited include Shreve, Lamb & Harmon’s Empire State Building (still the world’s tallest Deco skyscraper), Raymond Hood’s American Radiator Building (his first NYC skyscraper), Harvey Wiley Corbett’s Metropolitan Life North Building (originally meant to rise 100 stories above Madison Square), and Ely Jacques Kahn’s 2 Park Avenue (his great multi-color marvel).
