Observations on American Neoclassical Furniture
In the late 18th and early 19th century, uniquely American interpretations of English and French neoclassical furniture designs emerged in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore, the principal formal furniture-making centers of the new American Republic. In this lecture, father and daughter, Stuart P. Feld and Elizabeth Feld, of Hirschl & Adler Galleries, will explore some of the most important cabinetmakers of that time from these four major centers of production. They will examine the stylistic impact of these innovators on the cabinetmaking trade and their influence on local production.

Georgia native J. Morgan Puett emerged in the mid-1980s as a fashion designer. Her distinctive style, which drew from sources that explored the history of garments, were hand-made, crafted of hand-dyed natural fabrics, often in wrinkled, informal states. Her quirky SoHo retail space was heralded for its evocative environment a bewildering combination of store, art installation, architectural remnant, and factory. Puett closed her Wooster Street store in 1997, and archived all of its contents from dresses and patterns to financial records and shipping receipts-most of which was preserved with natural beeswax.

This is the first comprehensive survey of the artist duo Ligorano/Reese’s ongoing project of political editions and artworks. In the late 19th century, American artists by the hundreds including such luminaries as James McNeill Whistler, John Singer Sargent, Mary Cassatt, Thomas Eakins, and Winslow Homer were irresistibly drawn to Paris, the world’s new art capital. Observations on American Neoclassical Furniture
In the late 18th and early 19th century, uniquely American interpretations of English and French neoclassical furniture designs emerged in Boston, New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore, the principal formal furniture-making centers of the new American Republic. In this lecture, father and daughter, Stuart P. Feld and Elizabeth Feld, of Hirschl & Adler Galleries, will explore some of the most important cabinetmakers of that time from these four major centers of production. They will examine the stylistic impact of these innovators on the cabinetmaking trade and their influence on local production.

This exhibition celebrates the 800th anniversary of the founding of the Mongol empire by Chinggis Khan in 1206. A selection of Mongolian sculptures, paintings, manuscripts, and other ritual objects. This combination of traditional art and modern photographs, with subjects ranging from the ancient standing stones left by the Huns and Turks to scenes from the annual festival that celebrates Mongol accomplishments in horseback riding, archery, and wrestling, is an effort to illuminate a country whose history, art, and culture is virtually unknown to most westerners.

The Uptown all Stars have the backbone of Cyril Neville, Nick Daniels on bass, Mean Willie Green on drums and Norman Caesar on keyboards they remain the world’s one and only second-line reggae band, the keepers of the uptown funk. Mi Vida Loca - Pano Drawings by Chicano Prisoners (A, C, E)
This exhibit of paños from the San Antonio, Texas penal institutions. These simple cotton handkerchiefs have been transformed by Chicano inmates into drawings of expressive power and emotion offering a glimpse into a little known and complex world. Most of these paños were made in the middle to late 1990's when the art form thrived in Texas prisons. They were mailed to inmates' mothers or other family members as letters from jail. Many of these artworks were not intended to be seen outside the inner circle of their creators.

Bill Saxton and the Uptown All Stars (C, M)
Harlem native Bill Saxton began playing the saxophone after the Harlem riots. While in his 20s, he studied woodwinds, arranging and composition at the New England Conservatory.
The Uptown all Stars have the backbone of Cyril Neville, Nick Daniels on bass, Mean Willie Green on drums and Norman Caesar on keyboards they remain the world’s one and only second-line reggae band, the keepers of the uptown funk. Their sound is not easy to define and neither is Cyril Neville’s life. It celebrates the best of New Orleans musical culture and reminds us of the worst of our social injustices.

Blinky Palermo was born Peter Schwarze in Leipzig in 1943. He and his twin brother, Michael, grew up as adopted children under the name Heisterkamp. In 1962 he entered the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied with Joseph Beuys and, in 1964, adopted the name "Blinky Palermo," which he appropriated from an American boxing promoter and mafioso.

Gilded Splendor: The Liao Dynasty and Its Place in China's History (A, C, E)
Explore the recent archaeological finds which have illuminated China’s little-known Liao Dynasty through a guided tour of the Asia Society's Fall 2006 exhibition "Gilded Splendor: Treasures of China's Liao Empire (907-1125). Following the museum visit, Morris Rossabi will lead a discussion on "The Liao: Nomad Rule in China." Dr. Rossabi is Professor of Chinese and Central Asian History, City University of New York.
